Piglet's Own Movie

By Fabian Toulouse

One of Winnie the Pooh's best friends and companions is Piglet. He is often portrayed as a timid, hesitant creature, constantly startled and quick to hide. In Milne's original "Winnie the Pooh," in Chapter Three, Piglet says, "WHAT?", with a jump, to show that he hadn't been frightened, he jumped up and down once or twice more in an exercising sort of way. In Chapter Seven, "It is hard to be brave," said Piglet, sniffling slightly, "when you're only a very small animal." In Chapter Nine, Piglet says, "It's a little anxious," he said to himself, "to be a very small animal entirely surrounded by water." Piglet's catchphrase was, "Oh, dear! Oh, d-d-d-dear-dear!

"Piglet's Big Movie" was released in 2003 as an animated feature length production based on the characters in the Winnie-The-Pooh books and opened as #7 on it's opening weekend and a total box office for the movie run of over 23 million dollars. It was preceded by "The Tigger Movie" in 2000 and followed by "Winnie The Pooh: Springtime with Roo," released in 2004. In his film, Piglet is ashamed of being small, but he eventually learns that it's not so bad. Winnie and all of the pals learn that you don't have to be big to do big things.

Through the course of three flashback sequences, Piglet is allowed to recast himself as the hero of some of the original Winnie the Pooh adventures. Indeed, he comes to realize that one need not be big to do big things. The film is a moving testament to friendship and fun. It is a film filled with adventure, laughter and heart-felt moments.

As the Pooh gang sets out to harvest honey from the hives in the forest, Piglet is told he is too small to come along. Since Piglet feels like he is often left out, he decides to strike out on his own and sets out into the Hundred Acre Wood. When the honey hunters return, they can't find Piglet anywhere, just his scrapbooks of their adventures of the past. As they look through the books, Winnie and his pals realize how much Piglet means to them and how much they've taken him for granted. They set out to find Piglet using his scrapbook for clues, to "think, think, think" for clues as to where he might have gone.

"Piglet's Big Movie" enjoys a heavy rotation on Disney's Playhouse. Fearful little Piglet proves the point that size doesn't matter when it comes to accomplishing big things. It is a pointed lesson that not only children can learn from, but it's a good one for adults, even if it is from a Winnie The Pooh character.

Make Money with Used Stereo Equipment

By Scott Williams

Growing up, I was quite embarrassed of my father. He collected used stereo and TV equipment. When I was young I thought maybe this was normal for everyone, but upon visiting friends houses I realized that one generally only has one TV and stereo system per room, not five or ten. I avoided bringing friends to my house because they thought it was weird. One girl who came to my house was very confused when we started to watch TV because she couldn't figure out which one was associated with the audio, as all 7 of them were turned on at the time.

I would buy this used stereo equipment at rock-bottom prices, and then fix up. I would keep some of it for myself. Other things, I would either give as gifts to friends, or sell. I made a tidy little profit on my cottage industry for a while, but soon I was thinking bigger. With all of that used stereo equipment, I thought I could start my own venue. I tried renting a a place for few a months, and although it was a lot of fun, we never made any money. Most of the people who we booked, you see, were punk rock bands. They had a lot of fans, but none of the fans were willing to pay more than a few bucks for tickets. It wasn't long before we closed down.

I knew that I had to think of something to do with all of that used stereo equipment, and I had to do it fast. All of that work promoting my venue had left me dead broke. Soon, I would have to sell off my collection. Then it came to me. If I sold used stereo equipment, I could feed my passion.

Often we'd find equipment at the side of the road, pick it up and take it home to find out that it worked perfectly. An hour or so of cleaning and testing and it was ready to resell. No matter what my dad got for it, it was all profit. There aren't many businesses that can boast that. Over the years my dad has branched out to other electronic items, but used stereo equipment and tvs remains his bread and butter.

The great thing about used stereo equipment, as opposed to other kinds of electronics, is that it is easy to tell whether or not it is in good shape. Used stereo equipment either works or doesn't. If you're buying a used computer, it might work for a few months and fall apart. With used stereo equipment, however, this is almost never the case. Usually, what you see is what you get.

Unseen Pete: The Loveable Dragon

By Fabian Toulouse

A revolutionary breakthrough in live-action and animation, "Pete's Dragon," was released by Walt Disney Production in 1977. The story of a young orphan boy named Pete and his dragon, Elliott, the movie was the first Disney feature film to be released on home video in 1980. Animators chose to make Elliott an oriental dragon as such dragons are associated with good fortune. Indeed, Elliott is a do-gooder out to protect his orphaned ward.

In early 20th century Maine, a little orphan boy, Pete, runs away for his adoptive family, the evil Gogans. While the family looks for him, an invisible dragon named Elliott intervenes. Pete thanks Elliott and the two form a close friendship. It is then that Elliott reveals he can be invisible or visible when he chooses. Pete thinks Elliott should stay invisible for his own protection. As they travel further from the Gogans, they land in the fishing town of Passamaquoddy, where the town drunk, Lampie stumbles out of a tavern and sees Pete and Elliott, who were visible at the time. As he tells the townspeople, nobody believes him and Lampie is rescued by his grown-up, capable daughter, Nora. Lampie and Nora live in a lighthouse, where Nora keeps a lookout for her missing fianc, Paul, who has been lost at sea for almost a year, after a shipwreck.

Pete and Elliott find a sea cave near the lighthouse for shelter. Nora stumbles upon it and invites Pete to stay in the lighthouse. While there, he sees the picture of Nora's fianc, Paul and tells Nora that his dragon, Elliott can find him because he has a way of knowing things. Nora thinks that Elliott is an imaginary friend. Eventually, con men come to Passamaquoddy, who have learned of the dragon and try to persuade Pete to sell Elliott. The Gogans also wander into town trying to reclaim Pete. What follows is joint turmoil for the townspeople and Pete, Nora and Lampie as they try to escape all of them, with Elliott's assistance.

Revealing himself to save the mayor and a schoolteacher from a falling electrical line, Elliot soon becomes the hero of the town. The dragon rushes to save a ship heading from the jagged coast. He rekindles the lighthouse lamp, allowing the ship to steer clear rocks -- this fiery rekindling reveals the dragon to Nora. The ship is saved and Elliott becomes a hero. Nora's fianc, Paul finally returns, the sole survivor of the shipwreck. Paul lost his memory until intervention by Elliott made it return and he was on the ship that Elliott saved.

When all the action dies down and life returns to normal, Nora and Paul ask Pete and Elliott come live with them. Pete is overjoyed, but Elliott insists he must move on. Since Pete is safe in a loving family, he must move on to help the next child in need. As the film ends, Pete bids his flying friend a bitter-sweet farewell.

5 Tips To Note When Buying Karaoke Machines

By Ian Walker

First you have probably been to a lot of karaoke bars and parties and noticed the difference in the music. If you are becoming a karaoke fan you have probably inquired into this, and found out it has to do with the different companies that produce the discs. Being as the background music isn't the original artists, this is where the difference comes in.

Now when it comes time to purchase your karaoke machine you are going to have to decide on the type of discs you are going to play. You are going to be faced with a choice as some handle CDGs or CD+G or just plain karaoke song DVDs. You need to familiarize yourself with the advantages and disadvantage of these, when you are making your decision. Actually some with have built in music while others use Mp3s. Check around with your friends who have karaoke machines and see what type of discs they play. If you find a variety of them to check out, it will help you choose which method you like the most.

Features are another issue that is going to be important to you and a lot will depend on what you are going to be using it form. Sort of keep an open mind here, because you may have intentions for using it for one thing, then down the road start adding other uses to it. For example you may initially be buying so you can practice your own singing on. If that's the case then there are many features you are not going to need. But then 6 months down the road you might start having karaoke parties, then the other type features you are going to need.

You need to decide whether you want to be able to turn vocals on or off. Some of the music you buy may contain vocal for you to practice with then as you get better you can turn the vocal off. Your karaoke machine must have the option to do that. Of course you are going to want volume control. When it comes to microphones you are going to have to choose between wired or wireless, or even headset microphones. The price range of these vary, so that will be another deciding factor as well. Then there are things like being able to score the singer. Some karaoke machines have that capability built right into there.

Then it will come down to style and whether you are going to leave your machine at home all the time, or do you want to travel around with it. If its going to be a home unit you may want to look at a system that you can integrate with your home stereo systems. Then on the other hand, you may want to set it up in a separate area, so you will want a stand alone system. The draw back with this system is it can be quite bulky and take up a fair amount of room..

Then there are extras that you can add to it later on such as karaoke stands, which there are a variety of as well. If you are going to travel with it ,you will want to protect it as much as possible, so you may want to have some kind of carriers for your speakers. Also don't forget to protect your discs as much as possible.
